Doulas mother the mother!
Women have complex needs before, during and the weeks that follow childbirth.
In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, doulas provide consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. 
By "mothering the mother", the doula enables the new mother to recover from
pregnancy and birth and focus her energy on bonding with her new baby.
A doula is supportive to both the mother and her partner, and plays a crucial role
in helping a partner become involved in the birth.

Studies have found that with constant doula support during labor & delivery;
  Women experience:
      1. Shorter labor with fewer complications. 
      2. Less use of pain relief medications, including epidurals.
      3. Lower rates of caesarian delivery.
      4. Greater satisfaction with their childbirth experience.
      5. Reduction of the need for pitocin, forceps or vacuum  extraction 
      6. Shorter hospital stays.

  Newborns experience:
      1. More affectionate mothers in the postpartum period.
      2. Shorter hospital stays.
      3. Lower rates of fetal distress.
      4. Breastfeed more easily.
